How Medtronic LABS is Transforming Heart Health Patient Outcomes in Underserved Communities

The global rise in cardiovascular diseases is unrelenting, and the need for equitable heart health care is critical—now more than ever. Unsurprisingly, this urgency is felt most intensely in underserved communities, where healthcare disparities loom largest.

Medtronic LABS is leading the charge for change, crafting initiatives designed to bridge these healthcare gaps and elevate the standard of care in the world’s most vulnerable regions.

In a recent chat with Dr. Oren Ombiro, Head of Research and Policy, Africa, we discussed the robust strategies Medtronic LABS deploys to overhaul heart health care in underserved communities.

Dive into the insights from our conversation below.

Bridging Technology and Community-Based Care

Harnessing technology is fundamental in modern healthcare delivery. Dr. Ombiro details, “At Medtronic LABS, our SPICE platform is a robust digital toolbox that supports community health workers and healthcare providers in managing heart-related conditions smoothly.”

Alongside technology, community-based strategies are another pillar of our approach. By shifting care to a more local level and directing resources to primary healthcare, we help ensure earlier detection and more proactive management of cardiovascular diseases. Providing vital healthcare services directly to the communities that need them most is crucial in combating heart conditions in low-resource settings.

Targeting Prevalent Conditions

Our strategy zeroes in on primary heart-related conditions, namely hypertension, diabetes, and mental health, due to their pronounced impact on cardiovascular wellness.

Hypertension is a notable risk amplifier for heart-related complications. We aim to identify and manage this silent threat through targeted screenings and lifestyle modifications, averting potential premature deaths.

Similarly, diabetes is a crucial focus area due to its tight-knit link to cardiovascular issues. Individuals with diabetes are at double the risk of developing heart conditions. Our actions against diabetes range from promoting healthier dietary choices to discouraging tobacco and alcohol use, all aimed at creating a favorable ground for tackling diabetes and its allied cardiovascular risks.

The interplay between mental health and heart conditions is essential to our strategy. Depression, for example, can significantly hinder the management and outcomes of heart conditions, showcasing a two-way dilemma. This insight drives us to encompass physical and mental health in our care approach, striving for holistic health improvement.

By addressing these major conditions and risk factors, we’re working to create a global healthcare model that is as inclusive as it is effective.

Collaborations for Wider Impact

Collaboration is the foundation of our work at Medtronic LABS. Strong partnerships quicken our pace and expand our scope in improving heart health outcomes. Our collaborative network spans governments, faith-based organizations, civil society, professional associations, and subject matter experts.

We align our efforts with existing healthcare frameworks to avoid parallel systems. This methodology shapes our interactions with healthcare providers and community health workers (CHWs). By working alongside governments and other key stakeholders, we aim to bolster existing healthcare infrastructures, enhancing accessibility and the quality of heart health services in low-resource settings.

We constantly collaborate with professional associations and experts to maintain the scientific robustness and relevance of our digital platform, SPICE. This collective effort not only refines SPICE but also drives informed policy reform and financing initiatives, aligning them with the real needs of heart healthcare.

Recent Successes

As for tangible outcomes, Dr. Ombiro revealed that to date, Medtronic LABS has:

  • Screened nearly half a million individuals across six countries
  • Enrolled 213,000 patients in our digital care system across 400 facilities

Among the 41,000 individuals with hypertension monitored for over three months, controlled blood pressure levels rose from 40% at enrollment to 60%. A similar positive trend is observed in our diabetes cohort, with a rise in controlled blood glucose levels from 49% to 56% since enrollment.

He notes, “Our goal now is to scale these results to achieve a 70% control rate among patients. We’re deploying artificial intelligence to design personalized patient journeys, enabling proactive contact by community health workers. Early detection is a priority; if potential issues are identified, reminders are sent urging a visit to a healthcare facility.”

These tangible outcomes energize our continuous efforts to innovate for improved patient outcomes and a broader impact on global heart health.
