Converting health records from paper to digital systems is an important first step in health system transformation, but it’s just that – a first step. Data collection alone does not drive outcomes.
As the steward of SPICE, an open-source digital platform designed with and for health systems, patients, and communities, we are committed to true health system transformation.

How we go beyond digitization with SPICE:
- SPICE is focused on data-driven, outcomes-focused care at both the community and primary care levels. The platform is certified as a digital public good, and we work with Ministries of Health to plan for long-term country-ownership.
- SPICE enables health systems to collect high quality data and use data insights to make decisions that drive outcomes.
- At Medtronic LABS, our approach to health system strengthening is focused on long-term mentorship at every level of the health system to build sustained capacity.
- Equipped with data-driven insights from SPICE, service delivery is more efficient and effective. SPICE works, but ultimately health workers do the work.

Going beyond digitization to close the loop
Healthcare delivered at the community level by community health workers has been disconnected from care delivered within formal health systems. Bridging this gap requires going beyond digitizing health records. At Medtronic LABS, we work with health systems to strengthen and extend care delivery into local communities.

With SPICE-enabled care models, the patient journey is seamless regardless of whether they visit a facility, receive an SMS, talk on the phone with a provider, or welcome a visit from a community health worker.
In our work, we have seen how closing the loop between facilities and communities is one of the keys to driving treatment plan adherence and ultimately health outcomes.
Our list of partners and collaborators is always growing. From governments and multinational corporations to community-based organizations and global NGOs, we build cross-sector partnerships, because we can’t do this alone. Join us on the journey toward global healthcare transformation.
