Medtronic LABS partners with Sanofi to reduce NCDs in Tanzania and Sierra Leone

Medtronic LABS and Sanofi have partnered to improve patient access to non-communicable disease (NCD) care. In 2022, the joint project will focus on improving health outcomes for hypertension and diabetes in Tanzania and Sierra Leone. In year two, additional geographies will be added.

In Sub-Saharan Africa where the joint project will initially focus, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) have risen dramatically and are now the leading cause of both morbidity and mortality. With one million yearly deaths, CVDs are the single greatest killer in the region, exceeding HIV/AIDS. Even more disturbing, the region’s CVD toll is predicted to double by 2030, and most of the population affected by CVDs live in rural areas underserved by health programs.

As two major players in preventing and treating non-communicable diseases (NCDs), LABS and Sanofi are committed to addressing the growing burden of NCDs and specifically CVDs in rural areas through the power of this cross-sector partnership.

This multi-year, multi-country partnership will leverage Medtronic LABS tech-powered healthcare delivery solutions, local field operation and implementation, patient engagement, and education along with Sanofi’s’ global health unit which aims to improve the availability and affordability of thirty essential life-changing medicines while supporting local capacity building with programs for low and middle income countries.

This joint project will utilize Medtronic LABS Empower Health software and care model to provide community-centered, technology-enabled health delivery to underserved communities. Patients will benefit from convenient and easy access to regular blood pressure and blood glucose checks with real-time feedback, access to a team of tele-counselors who will provide direct patient support, and remote clinician access for feedback based on results and medication needs.

Within the first year of implementation, the goal is to screen over 90,000 patients, enroll over 20,000 patients, and improve clinical outcomes for over 10,000 patients.

This goal could not be achieved without working partnerships within each countries’ health system. In Sierra Leone, the project partnered with the Christian Health Association of Sierra Leone (CHASL) and the local Ministry of Health. The project will work with the Christian Social Services Committee (CSSC) and the local Ministry of Health in Tanzania.
