Medtronic LABS will receive computing credits and technical expertise from Amazon Web Services to help improve access to primary healthcare in underserved communities.
NAIROBI, KENYA, 15th May, 2023 — Medtronic LABS announced today that it has been selected as part of the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Health Equity Initiative, a $40 million, three-year commitment, supporting organizations that are developing solutions to advance health equity.
Through the initiative, AWS offers AWS credits and customized technical expertise to selected organizations around the world that want to use AWS services to improve health outcomes and health equity in any of the following areas: 1) increasing access to health services for underserved communities; 2) addressing social determinants of health; 3) leveraging data to promote more equitable and inclusive systems of care; and 4) advancing equity in diagnostics and screening.
The support from AWS will advance Medtronic LABS’s work to design and implement tech-powered healthcare delivery models that strengthen and extend health systems into local communities, delivering sustainable outcomes for underserved patients worldwide. Medtronic LABS’ open-source digital platform called SPICE goes beyond the commonly used CHW ‘survey tools’, to ensure that all community-based activities are linked to the health system and are driven by clinical needs for smarter resource allocation and better health outcomes. In 2023, Medtronic LABS will become the first digital global good for precision population health.
The Medtronic LABS mission is to improve access to healthcare for patients in underserved communities around the world. “We are excited to have been selected to participate in the AWS Health Equity Initiative, which will enable us to continue developing data-driven community healthcare solutions that address the social determinants of health and promote more equitable systems of care,” said Anne Stake, Chief Strategy and Product Officer at Medtronic LABS. Building cutting-edge technology is fundamental to our approach. “Our collaboration with AWS will further our goal of becoming the first digital global good for precision population health,” said Kelly Shelden, Head of Technology, Medtronic LABS.
“AWS believes individual health outcomes should not depend on socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, or neighborhood, “said Maggie Carter, Global Lead, Social Impact at AWS. “Cloud technology can help address the inequities in global health that have been amplified by the pandemic. Through the AWS Health Equity Initiative, we look forward to helping Medtronic LABS and other organizations worldwide use the power of cloud computing to advance health equity and improve health outcomes.”
